Okay, Really…What Is Effing The Dog?

by Mike Vardy on August 26, 2008

While Xerxes is busy editing the Cali Lewis interview we conducted today – it will be up before week's end – it was suggested to me that I go into more of an introductory phase with this article.  Many of you are (or are now) new to the site, and are wondering a few things, I’m sure:

1.  What is Effing The Dog?

2.  Is Mike Vardy married?  Because if he isn’t, I’d not only be surprised; I’d be all over him.

EffTDWell, I can answer #2 with an emphatic “yes.”  I am married – to my philosophy, my ideology, my methodology.  I am married to the concepts that I preach here on an almost daily basis.  I am married to my own eventualistic nature, which I have both nurtured, fostered and nurtured over the past several years.

Oh, and I also have a wife.  Hi, honey!

The answer to #1 is a bit more complex, but it is answerable.  Effing The Dog is the system behind the overall concept of Eventualism (or, rather, Eventualism Now – the process of eventually working through things now) and it is the gateway to a life that is better; with less responsibility, power and prestige.  Some people strive to achieve to get those three things and more; those who work at Effing The Dog (or EffTD for short), plod to procrastinate, eventually getting away from those three things and more.  It is far easier to get things done (or GTD) in an efficient manner than it is to get things done eventually.  Only through constant focus and “efforting” (which is the long form of “effing”), can one fulfill their potential at EffTD.

There are those that say that GTD is the way to go, people like David Allen and Merlin Mann (he who is my own personal Khan).  But they do not and cannot speak for everyone.  If David Allen or Merlin Mann jumped off a bridge to certain death, would you?  Of course not – that would be getting things done.  But if I was to do the same thing, except lower myself from the bridge with a rope or some other climbing device knowing full well it could mean my death, would you follow?  Only if you were Effing The Dog – because you couldn't be certain death would be the end result.  Certainty is uncertain when you're Effing The Dog.  EffTD allows you to get things done at your own speed – which should be slow to moderately slow – and you will make better decisions as a result – like not jumping off bridges like those guys.

Eventualism and Effing The Dog are all around us.  There are tools that will help you in your quest to become a full-fledged “EffTDer” such as Rock Band, the iPhone and raising small children.  There are everyday life-things such as elections, careers (prEFFessions, as I like to call them) and interaction with people that present new opportunities to EffTD and become a better Eventualist.  You don’t have to look very hard, either – you’ll see Eventualism at work everywhere.  Take your time; it's not going anywhere.  I mean, it is everywhere, right?

So, that’s your re-introduction to Effing The Dog.  Stick with me and you’ll learn more about this revolutionary “productivity alternativity.”  Just remember my credo:  If you’re not Effing The Dog, you’re doing something.

Talk to you later…eventually.
