I’ve become eventually excited about my week ahead (despite it being Wednesday, I’m just getting started as per usual), with the ability to be part of two fundraising efforts. One is for local comedian, Wes Borg, known as The Burning Van fundraiser. It is known as such because his van burned to the ground recently, leaving him without a van. He also lost many t-shirts, which will take an eventual amount of time to recoup.
The other fundraiser is going into its third year, and is courtesy of a collective of local comedians known as LoadingReadyRun. This fundraiser does not involve a van, burning or otherwise, but it does involve a bus. A Desert Bus, to be exactly precise.
What these insanely unselfish bunch do on a yearly basis is play a marathon session of the little-known game called Desert Bus (found in Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors package), all for Child’s Play. Child’s Play is a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 60 hospitals worldwide. This idea is far better than my idea, which was distributing the board game “Operation” in the same manner. I guess it just hit too close to home, as opposed to a home console.
As of this writing, this year’s marathon session is going to end after 127 hours of gameplay. That’s just over 5 days in metric time. Even I can’t play games for that long (unless you count this here blog). They’ve already broken their previous fundraising record, as for every dollar that is donated it applies towards increasing the playing time, and the dollar increment increases as the figure goes up. With both a BusCam and DriverCam, Internetians (or Web-sters, if you prefer) can watch all the inaction unfold, as well as participate in auctions for some pretty cool “schwag.” I don’t know what “schwag” is, but I hear it’s pretty desirable stuff.
As I previously mentioned beforehand, they’ve eclipsed the former record of $70,423 and are currently at $81,517. They’ve said that they’d love to hit 100K, and I think that Eventualists far and wide have a duty to help them reach their eventual goal. Everything points to us lending a hand…here’s why:
- Children grow up eventually (although some adults don’t), and all the proceeds of Desert Bus go to children.
- Play is what eventually happens when the work is done.
- Video games are currently the most eventual form of game, as in they were eventually created after many other types of games and are still going strong.
- The desert is eventual in size. (So is dessert, but that bears no relevance here.)
- Ever been on a long bus trip? Ever do after-school activities and have to take the “late bus” home? Yeah, that’s what I thought.
- The Commodore 64 eventually loaded, and LoadingReadyRun pays homage to it in their name. It’s about time someone did.
So, to pay homage to the C64 myself, I’ll spell out what you can do to help their cause and add might to their plight…in Basic.
10 GOTO DESERT BUS AND DONATE
20 GOTO 10
And you’re spent!
UPDATE: The final tally comes in at a whopping $132,548.94 raised after driving for 5 days, 16 hours . Good eventual going, LRR…and EffTDers who helped make it happen!
